Sleep is a complex and fascinating phenomenon characterized by various brain activity cycles. Recent research from Yale School of Medicine focuses on how neuronal ensembles in the hippocampus represent sequential experiences during sleep. By studying freely moving rats on linear tracks, researchers found that the brain can process multiple experiences without interference by representing past and future experiences in a compressed manner. These findings provide insight into how the brain organizes memories during sleep and could lead to further research on understanding the readout of hippocampal computations by downstream areas. The study was published in Nature Neuroscience in 2024.
