The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined an NHS IT provider over £6 million for a cyberattack in August 2022 that resulted in the theft of sensitive information and medical records belonging to 82,946 people. Hackers launched a ransomware attack on the IT company Advanced, which provides services to the NHS and other healthcare providers. Advanced supplies its Adastra system to 85% of NHS 111 providers and its Carenotes Electronic Patient Record to several community and mental health trusts. The attack occurred on August 4 and highlights the vulnerabilities in healthcare organizations’ cybersecurity.
