An international research team led by the University of Vienna has developed a new version of RNA building blocks that are more reactive and photosensitive, significantly reducing production time for RNA chips used in biotechnological and medical research. This advancement, published in Science Advances, improves the chemical synthesis of RNA chips, making it twice as fast and seven times more efficient. The study highlights the importance of RNA in medical products like mRNA vaccines and the challenges in producing RNA microarrays for research. The researchers’ new RNA building blocks allow for the synthesis of improved RNA chips, enabling the screening of candidate RNAs and the development of valuable RNA aptamers with diagnostic applications.
