Jeanine Valrie Logan sat in labor for nearly two hours in traffic to reach a birth center she wanted to deliver her daughter at. Currently, there are limited birth centers in Chicago’s south suburbs, prompting Logan to travel almost 30 miles. Now, Logan, a certified nurse midwife, is working on opening a birth center on the South Side of Chicago to provide high-quality maternity care, especially for marginalized populations. This initiative aims to address disparities in maternal health outcomes, improve access to care, and offer a more holistic approach to pregnancy and childbirth. The project is expected to open in 2026 pending state approval and funding.
