Mental health professionals condemn conversion therapy

admin

Three mental health professional bodies in Ireland have signed a memorandum of understanding renouncing the practice of conversion therapy, which they describe as unethical, potentially harmful, and unsupported by evidence. They aim to advocate for and support the LGBTI+ community. Conversion therapy attempts to change or suppress sexual orientations or gender identities deemed inferior, and is known by terms such as ‘gay cure therapy’ or ‘reparative therapy’. The bodies stress that conversion therapy is not acceptable in Ireland, as it does not work and can result in psychological harm. They encourage those with uncertainties about their sexuality or gender identity to seek qualified help instead.
