Revolving door: You are free to influence us “behind the scenes,” FDA tells staff leaving for industry jobs

admin

Emails obtained by The BMJ show that the US Food and Drug Administration allows departing employees to work “behind the scenes” to influence the agency despite restrictions on post-employment lobbying. This loophole in US revolving door policy allows former employees to engage in indirect lobbying activities. Recent bills seek to amend laws regulating departing employees’ restrictions, particularly targeting the health sector. High-level departures from health regulatory agencies to industry are common, with every FDA commissioner since 2000 going on to work for the industry. The FDA does not keep records on where employees go after leaving government service, raising concerns about revolving door practices.
