The IHCA warns that the deficit of acute psychiatric inpatient beds in Ireland may be closer to 1,800, rather than the previously reported 832. A recently obtained HSE report highlights that there are just over 1,100 acute psychiatric beds in the public health service, falling far short of the recommended numbers. The report also shows that staffing levels are only at 80% of the target recommended in the 2006 mental health policy. This shortage is causing difficulties in retaining mental health specialists and may lead to doctors leaving the country for better working conditions. The Department of Health is now considering the findings to address the deficit.
