Jess Morgan, a Dinwoodie RCPCH clinical fellow, shares her experience of struggling with the emotional impact of practicing medicine. Initially taught to toughen up and hide her feelings, she eventually experienced burnout, anxiety, and depression. After opening up about her struggles, she found a sense of belonging and connection with her colleagues. Doctors often hide their emotions due to a culture of stoicism in the medical profession, but it is important to normalize vulnerability and create spaces for honest conversations. Initiatives like Schwartz Rounds and peer support groups can help reduce stress and enhance empathy among healthcare professionals. Sharing our humanity can lead to a more supportive and compassionate work environment.
