Delivering Low Birth Weight Babies May Heighten Women’s Risk Of Dementia

A study published in Neurology found that women who give birth to low-weight babies are at a higher risk of developing dementia later in life. Researchers used data from the Nurses’ Health Study II and found that women who had low birth-weight deliveries had lower scores in cognitive assessment tests compared to those who delivered normal-weight babies. The more low birth-weight deliveries a woman had, the lower her scores were. However, the researchers caution that the results show an association, not a causative link. Further research is needed to confirm the findings and explore potential interventions to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia in these women.
