A study published in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is lower in patients with idiopathic orbital inflammation compared to those with necrotizing fasciitis or orbital cellulitis. Researchers reviewed cases of adult patients with these conditions presenting acutely to the ED and found that an elevated NLR may indicate infectious disease. The study suggests that NLR can aid in distinguishing between acute orbital infectious disease and noninfectious inflammation, allowing for rapid interventions to prevent potential vision- and life-threatening complications. This biomarker should be used in conjunction with clinical and radiographic evaluations for accurate diagnosis.
