Two new studies presented at the ASMBS 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting suggest that total robotic metabolic and bariatric surgery may have advantages over laparoscopic approaches, including shorter operative times, reduced hospital stays, and fewer complications. One study found that total robotic procedures for gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy had better outcomes compared to laparoscopy. Another study focused on patients with severe obesity and type 2 diabetes, showing improved results with robotic surgery. The researchers highlight the precision, flexibility, and control offered by robotic surgery, leading to quicker recovery, less pain, and lower infection risks. Robotic surgery is becoming more common in metabolic and bariatric procedures due to its benefits.
