A study has found that consuming high amounts of the low-calorie sweetener Xylitol may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Xylitol is commonly used as a sugar substitute in processed foods and is known for its ability to reduce tooth decay. The research, published in the European Heart Journal, involved a large-scale patient analysis which showed that those with high levels of Xylitol in their system were more likely to experience cardiovascular events. While the study does not show causation, it suggests a link between Xylitol consumption and increased risk of clotting events. Further research is recommended to understand the long-term impact on cardiovascular health.
