When a person stops taking their antidepressant, they may experience a wide range of symptoms, including nausea, headache, insomnia, irritability, and even suicidal ideation. A systematic review published in The Lancet Psychiatry found that about 15% of patients experience withdrawal symptoms after weaning from antidepressants, with severe symptoms occurring in 2 to 3% of cases. Different antidepressants also vary in their association with discontinuation symptoms. Although 17% of patients in the placebo groups experienced these symptoms, indicating other factors may be at play, researchers emphasize the need for more high-quality studies on antidepressant withdrawal effects.
