Every year, many cancer patients in Sweden may not receive adequate pain relief at the end of life due to the healthcare system failing to recognize their pain. The Abbey Pain Scale, often used for patients who cannot communicate their pain, is ineffective for cancer patients. Currently, there is no specific pain assessment tool designed for cancer patients, leading to potential undertreatment of pain. Researcher Sussi Tegenborg’s thesis highlights the need for a more suitable instrument to accurately assess pain in cancer patients globally. Tegenborg will defend her dissertation on this topic at Umeå University.
