A HIQA report found that switching to enhanced flu vaccines for over-65s could lead to better clinical outcomes, specifically in preventing hospitalizations and cases of the flu. The report notes that while these enhanced vaccines may be more expensive, they could ultimately save the HSE money due to reduced hospitalizations. However, the cost-effectiveness of high-dose vaccines is still in question. The report is currently in a public consultation phase, with a final recommendation to be issued to the Minister for Health. Enhanced flu vaccines are being considered as a way to improve effectiveness, especially in older adults with compromised immune systems.
