The Investigative Desk and The BMJ found numerous relationships between Big Tobacco’s subsidiaries and medical research. Only a minority of leading medical journals had policies prohibiting tobacco-funded studies. The BMJ updated its tobacco policy to exclude research funded by the industry or involving authors with financial ties to the industry, aiming to provide more independent and trusted content. Calls are made for more journals to ban research by tobacco companies and their subsidiaries.
