Kidneys from deceased donors previously on dialysis may be tied delayed graft function

A study found that 1.4% of deceased kidney donors had dialysis before donation from 2010-2018, resulting in 969 transplanted kidneys. Kidney transplants from deceased donors who had dialysis were associated with a higher rate of delayed graft function but no significant difference in graft failure or death compared to those from donors who did not have dialysis. Researchers emphasized the need to increase the pool of available kidneys for transplant recipients. The study supports including organs from deceased donors who had dialysis in kidney donation to meet the high demand for transplants.
