FDA Urged To Relax Decades-Old Tissue Donation Restrictions for Gay and Bisexual Men

admin

In 2020 and 2023, the federal government changed organ donation guidelines to allow men who have had sex with another man to donate organs and blood. However, restrictions on donated tissue, such as corneas, remain in place. Advocates and lawmakers are frustrated by the FDA’s refusal to align guidelines for tissue donation from gay and bisexual men with the rest of the body. They argue that current guidelines are unnecessary and discriminatory. Despite advancements in testing, the FDA has yet to act on changing the guidelines. A campaign called “Legalize Gay Eyes” is advocating for these changes due to personal experiences with rejected organ donations.
