Low testosterone tied to increased risk for mortality, CVD events

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that men with low testosterone concentrations have a higher risk for all-cause mortality, with those with very low testosterone also at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease mortality. The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 prospective cohort studies involving 24,109 men. They found that lower testosterone concentrations, as well as other sex hormones, were associated with higher risks of mortality and cardiovascular events. However, further research is needed to determine the underlying mechanisms of these associations. An editorial accompanying the study suggests that testosterone therapy may have cardiovascular benefits in patients with very low testosterone concentrations.
