A new study based on Medicaid claims data found that children with chronic medical conditions who also have a sleep disorder are at a higher risk of increased healthcare utilization. The study showed that children with a diagnosed sleep disorder were nearly two times more likely to have increased healthcare utilization compared to those without sleep disorders. The most common sleep disorder identified was sleep-disordered breathing. The researchers recommend targeted interventions and screenings for managing these high-risk children with chronic medical conditions and sleep disorders to reduce healthcare costs. The study highlights the importance of addressing and treating comorbid sleep disorders in children with chronic medical conditions.
