NEC Corporation and Tokyo Medical and Dental University have developed AI technology to support individuals with chronic lower back pain by estimating its causes. The tool uses NEC’s human pose estimation technology to analyze body parts’ relationships, including joint flexion and back shape, to determine the cause of pain. Abductive reasoning technology processes image and interview data to provide a rapid diagnosis in 10 seconds and recommend a tailored exercise program. With Japan’s aging population, technology to treat CLBP is crucial. Virtual reality has also shown promise in treating CLBP. NEC and TMDU plan to test the AI tool at care centers and expand its application to neck and shoulder disorders.
