Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have identified a link between cellular metabolism, DNA damage, and the progression of fatty liver disease to liver cancer. The incidence of liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), has risen due to the increase in fatty liver disease, with MASH, a severe form of the disease, posing a higher risk of developing HCC. The study showed that MASH-inducing diets cause DNA damage in liver cells, leading to cellular senescence. This data implicates diet-induced DNA damage in the development of liver cancer and suggests potential new therapeutic approaches for preventing and treating the disease.
