A study by UT Health San Antonio shows that using a smartphone app alongside medication can help underserved patients with opioid use disorder reduce their days of opioid use and stay in treatment longer. The app combines contingency management behavioral therapy and peer support. Patients who used the app saw a 35% decrease in days of opioid use and stayed in treatment 19% longer compared to those using medication only. This approach may help address the societal, economic, and personal burdens of opioid use disorder. The study highlights the importance of augmenting medication with app-based contingency management for better treatment outcomes.
