Intensive Psychiatric Home Care May Cut Hospital Readmission

A study conducted in Germany compared intensive home treatment to standard psychiatric inpatient care for 400 participants with an acute mental health crisis. The home treatment resulted in an 18% lower readmission rate over 12 months compared to inpatient care. Patients in the home treatment group had significantly lower hospital readmission rates, spent fewer inpatient days, and had lower combined readmission rates to any psychiatric service. While there were no differences in job integration, quality of life, or symptom severity, home treatment was deemed a viable alternative to inpatient care. Limitations included the lack of randomization and the short-term follow-up.
