Aletha Maybank, the American Medical Association’s first chief equity officer, is leaving the organization after five and a half years. Maybank, a respected health equity advocate, forced the AMA to confront its racist past, including excluding Black physicians from membership for over a century. During her tenure, the AMA admitted to troubling actions and pledged to dismantle white supremacy and racism within medicine. Maybank plans to launch a new venture at the intersection of art and medicine to address health equity through storytelling. While her departure may worry some in the field of health equity, she believes the AMA remains committed to anti-racist work.
