An outbreak of illness in a remote part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with unknown cause has led to speculation that known diseases like malaria, pneumonia, influenza, Covid-19, or measles may be exacerbated by severe malnutrition. The area’s food insecurity, low vaccination coverage, and limited healthcare resources have contributed to the high number of deaths. The World Health Organization has dispatched a team to help with identification and treatment. Malnutrition is likely playing a significant role in the outbreak, especially in children under 5. Lack of access to diagnostics and healthcare services has hindered efforts to address the situation.
