A study published in JAMA found that text message reminders for patients who delay refilling their medications did not improve medication refill rates over a year. The study included over 9,000 patients from diverse populations and found that while there was an initial improvement in refill adherence with text reminders, this effect did not last for longer than three months. The researchers explored different messaging strategies but found no difference in effectiveness. They plan to study more advanced digital technologies in the future to improve longer-term adherence to medication refills for chronic conditions.
