The introduction of a new vaccine for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) has led to a significant decrease in cases, hospitalizations, and ICU admissions in newborn infants this winter compared to the previous year. Over 9,300 babies have received the vaccine since September 1, resulting in only ten notified RSV cases, seven hospitalizations, and less than five ICU admissions. This is a stark contrast to the 249 cases, 173 hospitalizations, and 27 ICU admissions reported during the same period last year. The RSV Immunisation Pathfinder Programme aims to reduce the burden on the health service by preventing illnesses and hospitalizations among young children.
