A study found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at a higher risk for heart failure, particularly heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), compared to non-RA controls. The analysis included 1,445 RA patients and 4,335 non-RA controls, with RA patients having a 79% higher risk for incident heart failure. The increased risk was mainly driven by HFpEF, suggesting a role for inflammation in this subtype. The study highlights the potential for anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the risk of HFpEF in RA patients and individuals with chronic inflammation. Further research is needed in this area.
