Rammya Mathew: New guidance is a golden opportunity to tangibly improve asthma care

The National Review of Asthma Deaths from over a decade ago revealed that many asthma-related deaths in the UK are preventable, with one key risk factor being the overuse of reliever inhalers and underuse of preventer inhalers. The recent NICE guidance aims to address this issue by encouraging early use of combination inhalers and maintenance and reliever treatment regimens. However, there are challenges in implementing this guidance, such as ensuring proactive review of patients and improving asthma management competencies in primary care. By training clinicians in asthma management and facilitating access to specialist advice, we can work towards preventing unnecessary asthma deaths in the future.
