Potassium Nitrate Fails to Boost Exercise Capacity in HFpEF

A trial conducted on 84 patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction found that the administration of potassium nitrate (KNO3) did not improve exercise capacity or quality of life compared to potassium chloride (KCl). While KNO3 did increase nitric oxide levels in the blood, it did not result in significant improvements in peak oxygen uptake or total work performed during exercise tests. Quality of life also did not improve with KNO3 administration. The study, led by Payman Zamani, MD, MTR, was published in JAMA Cardiology and highlighted the limitations of chronic inorganic nitrate administration for improving exercise capacity in patients with HFpEF.
