The Caru programme, a free learning program in Ireland, focuses on improving palliative, end of life, and bereavement care in nursing homes. Launched in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, it aims to provide compassionate and person-centered care to residents and their families. The program, a collaboration between the Irish Hospice Foundation, AIIHPC, and the HSE, has been delivered to nearly half of Ireland’s nursing homes. It includes training for all staff members, not just healthcare professionals, on end-of-life care. The program also includes an Arts & Health initiative and has seen successful projects, such as the Milford Voices Choir. The program was a finalist in the Age Friendly Ireland Awards 2024 and has received positive feedback for its impact on nursing home residents, staff, and families.
