The government has decided to increase the personal injury discount rate in England and Wales, a move welcomed by medical defence experts. This change could potentially save the NHS millions of pounds in compensation payments. The discount rate is used by courts to determine the lump sum paid to those who suffer serious and long-term injuries, with a lower rate resulting in higher compensation costs. Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood announced the increase from the current rate of -0.25% to 0.5%, effective from January 11, 2025. This adjustment aligns England and Wales with Northern Ireland and Scotland.
