New guidelines for the diagnosis and management of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) have been published, developed by an international team including women with lived experience. POI, defined as ovarian function loss before age 40, affects 4% of women globally and is linked to infertility, psychological distress, and health risks. The updated 2024 guidelines cover symptoms, diagnosis, causation, and treatment of POI, emphasizing personalized hormone therapy. The guidelines also provide information on genetic causes, muscle health impact, non-hormonal therapies, and lifestyle interventions. The goal is to improve the speed and sensitivity of diagnosis, involving shared decision-making between healthcare professionals and women with POI.
