A study published in JAMA Neurology found that gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia are associated with an increased risk of neurological disorders in the months to years after giving birth. The study included over 600,000 women with singleton pregnancies in Sweden. Women with gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and eclampsia had a higher risk of new-onset migraine, headache, epilepsy, sleep disorder, or mental fatigue compared to women with normotensive pregnancies. The risk of epilepsy was especially high after eclampsia. The researchers recommend further investigation and follow-up for neurological complications in women affected by these pregnancy conditions.
