Mapping blood system changes offers new hope for leukemia treatments

Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have created a comprehensive map of changes in the blood system throughout a human’s lifetime. They analyzed gene expression in over 58,000 individual blood stem cells at different stages, from fetal development to old age. The study revealed shifts in blood cell production according to life stage, with implications for blood cancers like acute myeloid leukemia. Leukemia cells that resembled younger blood cells had worse prognoses, possibly due to reprogramming to be more aggressive. Future studies will explore targeting factors that drive young blood cell production to potentially treat leukemia. The study was published in Nature Methods.
