As the H5N1 bird flu spreads across the nation, California has declared a state of emergency due to hundreds of cases in dairy herds. The virus has also caused the first severe human case in Louisiana. Governor Gavin Newsom issued the emergency declaration to streamline the state’s response to the outbreak, which has affected 865 dairy herds in the U.S. To date, there has been no person-to-person transmission of the virus. Health officials advise avoiding contact with sick animals and wearing proper protective equipment when handling them to prevent infection. The CDC reports a total of 61 human cases of H5N1 in the country since April.
