Duncan Nichol, the chair of the Countess of Chester Hospital trust board, admitted during a public inquiry that he failed to realize a report on unexpected baby deaths did not exonerate nurse Lucy Letby. Letby is accused of killing and attacking babies on the neonatal unit from June 2015 to June 2016. Nichol, who also led the trust during the Beverley Allitt killings in the 1990s, did not notice that a report commissioned by the trust did not exclude Letby as a suspect. This oversight has raised concerns about the hospital’s handling of the situation.
