A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that irregular sleep patterns can increase the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), such as stroke or heart attack. Researchers analyzed data from 72,269 individuals aged 40 to 79 and found that irregular sleepers had a 26% greater risk for MACE compared to regular sleepers. Meeting the recommended hours of sleep did not offset the risk for irregular sleepers. Maintaining regular sleep-wake patterns is important for overall cardiometabolic health. The study suggests that more attention should be paid to sleep regularity in public health guidelines and clinical practice.
