A recent outbreak of unexplained deaths in southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo was determined to be caused by a combination of infections, including malaria and common respiratory viruses, as well as malnutrition. The World Health Organization reported that children under five accounted for around half of the cases and deaths. The outbreak, which started in late October, resulted in 891 cases and 48 deaths by mid-December. The affected region has high malnutrition rates and limited access to healthcare and resources. The WHO called for stronger malaria control and improved nutrition to address the public health risk in the affected communities.
