Government departments such as the HSE and Department of Health have produced around 650 tonnes of CO2 from flights taken in the last four years, leading to contributions of over €27,000 to the Government’s Climate Action Fund. These payments are meant to offset the carbon emissions caused by official air travel. The majority of these emissions came from flights taken last year, with the HSE and Department of Health each contributing significant amounts. Critics argue that these payments do not effectively reduce emissions and simply shift responsibility to other countries. The carbon offset payments are used for activities such as planting trees and bog rehabilitation schemes.
