A new global study shows a 60% drop in deaths from diarrheal diseases worldwide, with the highest mortality rates still among children and the elderly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The study, conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, reports 1.2 million deaths in 2021, down from 2.9 million in 1990. The decrease is attributed to interventions like oral rehydration therapy and improved sanitation. While progress has been made, researchers emphasize the need for a multipronged approach including vaccines to further reduce the global burden of diarrheal diseases.
