Osmometry is a method to determine a sample’s osmolality by measuring the total number of osmotically active particles in a solution. Knauer’s K-7400S osmometer uses freezing point osmometry to accurately determine osmolality. The osmometer has a highly precise thermistor to detect temperature changes. It is commonly used in pharmacies for quality control of batch preparations, as well as in the food industry to measure osmolality of isotonic beverages. Isotonic beverages have the same osmolality as human blood, allowing for faster nutrient absorption. Knauer aims to further minimize measurement time and optimize the osmometer in the future. More information can be found on Knauer’s website.
