A study presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Annual Scientific Meeting discussed the prevalence of food sensitization among children in Honduras. The study found that food sensitization is common, despite lower rates of reported clinical food allergy. The research team hypothesized that prevalence of food allergy in lower- and middle-income countries is lower than in industrialized countries, but their findings contradicted this hypothesis. The study also highlighted the difference in sensitization patterns between Honduran children and those in the U.S., suggesting that cross-reactivity could be a major confounder in interpreting IgE results, potentially affecting immigrants from these regions.
