A researcher at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Center is working on improving treatment options for kidney cancer patients by boosting the immune system to detect and kill kidney tumors. With funding from a Department of Defense Early Career Scholar Award, Aguirre de Cubas is focusing on reactivating the immune system to recognize and target cancer cells better. By using innovative tools such as targeting mitochondrial DNA, his goal is to develop a combination therapy that makes tumors more visible to the immune system and less resistant to treatment. The research is supported by the South Carolina Disparities Research Center, which aims to support emerging researchers and improve cancer health outcomes for South Carolinians.
