A study published in JAMA Network Open found that Black premature newborns experience higher rates of complications such as late-onset sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis compared to white and Hispanic newborns. Mortality rates were similar across all racial groups by 2022. The research, led by Nansi S. Boghossian, analyzed data from over 90,000 newborns born at 22 to 29 weeks’ gestation in NICUs between 2018 and 2022. The study highlighted the need for quality improvement approaches and addressing social determinants of health to promote health equity in hospital outcomes and beyond.
