A study in The BMJ found that coaching inexperienced clinicians just before carrying out a medical procedure improves their success rate and patient safety. The study involved training sessions for intubating infants, which can be challenging and stressful. Participants who received coaching had a 10% higher success rate on their first attempt compared to those who did not receive coaching. The training also reduced cognitive workload, improved competency, and decreased complication rates. Just-in-time training was found to be feasible and non-disruptive to workflow. The researchers suggest this approach could benefit inexperienced clinicians in other high-stakes procedures as well.
