“Bill of the Month” is a crowdsourced investigation by KFF Health News and NPR that aims to understand the impact of high medical bills on patients. Since its start over 6½ years ago, the series has received nearly 10,000 submissions, totaling almost $6.3 million in bills. The investigation has led to policy changes, such as the No Surprises Act in 2020. The series has helped many patients negotiate and reduce their bills, highlighting issues such as surprise billing, high prescription drug costs, and location-based pricing differences. While the NPR partnership is ending, the “Bill of the Month” series will continue.
