Military personnel often struggle with sleep disorders, with traditional solutions like medications and therapies proving ineffective. Researchers at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson aim to address this issue with a $3 million grant. Led by William “Scott” Killgore, PhD, the team at the Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab is exploring the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation to target brain areas associated with insomnia. Initial findings suggest this approach can improve sleep quality. The team plans to conduct a three-year study with 120 participants to assess the long-term effects. This innovative project has the potential to revolutionize treatment for sleep disorders in both military and civilian populations.
