Patients who did not have their patella resurfaced during total knee arthroplasty had higher rates of revision, according to data presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons Annual Meeting. Data from over 162,000 patients showed that unresurfaced patellas had a 1.6% higher revision rate compared to resurfaced patellas. While 1-year results were similar, deviations began to show between 1-2 years post-operation and continued to gain significance up to year 5. Patients in the unresurfaced group had a higher risk of revision due to pain. The study suggests considering patella resurfacing at the time of surgery to avoid increased revision rates.
